Learning Outcomes

This course is an introduction to the methods and skills required for academic legal research. In addition to teaching the technical competencies required for research, the course will focus on the substance and style of legal and academic writing.

This is why this course aims to equip the participants with the required skills to do legal research both professionally and academically. Thus, the course focuses on four main pillars, namely: legal research methodologies, introduction to different writing techniques, analysis of legal documents, as well as training on using different legal databases.

The course is designed to better equip the students with the required research skills, thus they are expected to do all the assigned readings as there will be weekly discussions on the readings. This will be part of their attendance in class and their final evaluation.

Students applying for this course are expected to deliver three writing assignments, noting that there will be a selection process for publishing the best papers on RISC webpage. Also, this course aims to develop the students’ presentation and the communication skills by critically engaging them in a number of open debates on different legal issues.

Content and Structure.

Part I: Introduction to research methodologies

  • Session 1: How do we define academic legal research? What distinguishes academic writing from non-scholarly legal research?
  • Session 2: What are the components of academic legal research? How to formulate a research question/thesis?
  • Session 3: What are the best writing techniques? What are the different citation methods?

Part II: Writing

  • Session 4: How is the Egyptian legal system designed? What is the hierarchy of Egyptian courts? How to analyze legal documents such as courts verdicts, legislations, as well as administrative decrees?
  • Session 5: What are the main legal research tools? What are the main legal journals?
  • Session 6: Assignment (1) + Open debate
  • Session 7: How to analyze legislations and decrees?
  • Session 8: How to analyze courts verdicts and judicial documents?
  • Session 9: Assignment (2) + Open debate
  • Session 10: What are the main legal research tools? + Open debate
  • Session 11: Assignment (3)
